Pre-Bangkok research #2 – Hotels, part 1

[Breakfast] – Ms. Marly on Flickr, 30th Apr ‘06.

Although I mentioned in my previous post that hotels were out, I did end up looking into some of them. As things turned out, LS would be coming on the trip along with her boyfriend. The brother had school in January, NZ and his other half had work to attend to.

And yeah, the below hotels were suggested by her, and I had the dubious honor of checking them out.

Baiyoke Sky
Address: 222 Rajprarop Road Rajthevee Bangkok 10400

This hotel is located in Pratunam. Good area for shopping, and good view for you too since it’s like the damned highest hotel in the zone.

Reviews from TripAdvisor showed a mix of good and bad reviews. Highly contrasting reviews at that. Weird isn’t it? It seemed like more complaints came from the lower floors though.

Anyway, it was way overpriced, starting from THB3340 for a junior suite. Miles out of our budget in fact, even for the cheapest room there.

First Hotel
Address: 2, Soi Somprasong 1, Petchaburi Road, Bangkok 10400

3-star hotel in Pratunam area as well, affordably priced at THB1150 for a Main Wing room (no room type stated) at Asiatravel. The hotel lists a Main Wing double room at THB1500 with breakfast included.

TripAdvisor traveller reviews were atrocious though: take a look for yourself.

Randomly quoted: “i went check in to the hotel and got single beds for my rm when i asked for twin sharing. the toilet was horrible, hot water and cold water inconsistent, towels looked dusty and not promising..” (click to read more)

I read about Hotel Manhattan in the HWZ Bangkok travel thread, but gaveup as soon as I saw the red THB2000 price flashing.

Nana Hotel was also given a brief scan: THB1290 for a double room with complimentary breakfast (for internet bookings only). Not too expensive for a hotel, proximity to the BTS but nah still a little overpriced; not my first choice definitely.

That’s all for hotels. Next up: guesthouses!
